Welcome...

This area of the sustainable.org.uk web site is set aside for developments with sustainable concepts in mind.

The process is encapsulated in the ethos:

What sort of developments?

Are you familiar with diagram to the right?

The glyph shows the interconnected themes of society, economics and environment. This triad of issues is at the core of what sustainability is about.

Looking into the future, to the need for (long-term) stewardship of the resources of this planet, sustainable concept development would exist in the intersecting areas between each circle or theme.

What are sustainable concepts?

For example:

In between Social and Economic, we could imagine the creation of local currencies - of goods and service exchange systems.  Historically, this began with barter of course, but in recent years, LETS and Timebanks systems have appeared and shown themselves to be popular as  well as being a way of reinvigorating community bonds, previously seen as strained.

Linking the three:

At the centre of all three intersections, is the development and demonstration centre, the creative place for making such ideas fly.

Innovate>>     Demonstrate>>     Disseminate

The idea of a local currency which can provide person-to-person service

(or “favours” in the case of one local currency set up in the 1990’s),

resources for locally based micro-manufacturing, or basic day-to-day needs (starting with locally grown organic food) represents “support from below

- a definition of sustainability which you can find on our home page here.

In between Social and Environmental, we might look at a local food grower’s co-op, growing local food for personal consumption, with surplus being traded to local need.  We could add to this area a compost club, nursery and a seed bank to make such an initiative more dynamic and effective.

In between Economic and Environmental we might think about a range of renewable resource-based eco-cottage industry projects.  In  these current economic times, it is widely felt that the need is rising to start making things again - but how? Other economies in other countries own most of the natural resources of manufacture.

We should be re-examining our local capabilities, our local resources.  What we could discover is that Bast Fibre Renewables are an important key to the solution - in providing the resources to make things again, the things we need.

TranquilityBase
a gateway project

Back  in 2008, Google announced their 10^100 (ten to the one hundred) project, asking for ideas which they would select for charitable funding.

Various categories were given to base ideas on with just one stipulation - any idea submitted had to be an idea gifted to the world.

Have a look at the Google 10^100 site here

Voting concluded in 2009 and whilst we’ve heard nothing about which projects have been chosen for donations from Google’s fund, they will announce the winners soon.

In the mean time, here’s the project application we submitted:

The next step is on the horizon

In order to develop a bioregional response to the challenges ahead of us all, we need to incubate good ideas, help them get off the ground by providing resources and training, tailored to a sustainable ideal.

There we will process the resources, showcase the items produced and train in cooperation and media-use.

Looking to implement 2012~onwards
Designs on the future

In order to be ready for the next step, we will be

putting forward projects which may become fully

fledged cooperatives - community enterprise start-ups.

For years, we have been researching and developing

organic, sustainable and environmentally sound ideas, waiting for their time of need (eg: see our BUGS page).

In this section, we reveal some of those ideas in detail.
